The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has suggested that the Israeli military might have committed war crimes by shelling and launching airstrikes on civilian neighborhoods in Gaza.
Her comments come as reports of civilian casualties soar. As of Wednesday night, 697 Palestinians had been killed, of which 518 were civilians, including 170 children and 86 women, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
“There seems to be a strong possibility that international humanitarian law has been violated, in a manner that could amount to war crimes,” Pillay told the U.N. Human Rights Council. “Every one of these incidents must be properly and independently investigated.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the UNHCR’s accusations as a “travesty” and upbraided the organization for failing to lambaste Hamas for using “human shields.”
